ABOUT THE COUP:
Perhaps more than any other Cali-affiliated hip-hop outfit, the Coup must be understood within the proper context. Their music directly relates to their life experiences, their environment, and the struggle for self-definition. Ever since the Last Poets, the original inner city riots, many rappers have talked revolutionary talk, but few have walked the walk quite like Boots, the son of a Black Panther Party lawyer who grew up in Oakland in the 70s, a time when "power to the people" was not just a slogan, but a way of life.
ABOUT PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS:
The underground hip-hop outfit People Under the Stairs were formed by Mike Turner (Double K) and Chris Portugal (Thes One), who met on the fringe of L.A.'s late-'90s hip-hop underground. The duo, devoted to jazzy samples, danceable beats, intricate rhyming skills, and laid-back humor, debuted in 1998 with the acclaimed The Next Step and followed it up in 2000 with Question in the Form of an Answer. Gathering heavy praise and touring with De La Soul, the group took their road experiences and brought it to the studio to record their next album.
ABOUT THE FLAVOR GROUP:
The Flavor Group, LLC is a leader in the world of Urban Dance and Special Event Marketing. This collective of musicians, dancers, and visual artists was founded by Prem Kumta in 2001 and continues to build community through events that encompass everything from professional dance contests to South Asian concerts. The Flavor Group, LLC also offers a wide array of services including event consulting, graphic design, and web, DVD, and film production for clients as diverse as Red Bull, SF Mayor Willie Brown, and Sony Entertainment.
ABOUT TRUE SKOOL:
True Skool has transformed the SF club landscape from mundane to magic as it presents the cream of international rhyme sayers and beat-slangers. Pam the Funkstress, Afrika Bambaataa, Masta Ace, Zion I, Asheru, and J-Live: the list of performers, who've graced the stage for True Skool reads like a who's who of hip-hop's independent royal family.
ABOUT SOLE DIVISION:
The Sole Division collective has garnered sound recognition
for innovation, cultural advancement, and the articulation and
application of Sole Division Music and Arts 2004. The festival was
highly praised and named, "The greatest conceptual event ever in
Northern California," by the Metro Magazine as well as "The Suburban
Woodstock of our generation" by Evil Monito Magazine. The collective, lead by Sean Miyashiro, has orchestrated customized marketing campaigns communicated through internet, print, radio, and onsite-presence for companies like Alternative Press, Immune Enviorments, San Jose Downtown Association, and PETA among others.
